JAMES MANGAN

On Tuesday, at the National Soldiers' Home at Milwaukee, James Mangan a pioneer settler of Chilton town and 72 years of age, passed to his reward in the other world.

The deceased person was a native of Ireland, where he was born Jan. 19, 1829, at Collinstown, County West Meath. At the age of three years he came to America with his parents who settled in Canada where they remained until 1848 when they moved to Green Bay.

In 1849 he was married to Catherine Hayes and the following year came to Calumet County, locating in the woods in the town of Chilton. Mr. Mangan was an ambitious young man and not afraid of work. He soon had a cabin erected and a clearing to raise provisions for himself and his young bride. He passed through all the hardships of a pioneer fife, but never allowed himself to become discouraged and to this trait of character his financial success may be attributed.

In 1861 when the stars and stripes were fired upon at Fort Sumpter, he came to the village and was among the first to enroll as a member of Company K, of the 4th Regiment. The company having a larger number than required he was one of those who were left behind. He again enlisted in Company G, of the famous fighting 14th Regiment and served his country well. Some two years ago he left Chilton and took up his residence at the National Home. About a year ago he was attacked by a malady which caused his death.

Every human being has his faults, and the deceased person was no exception. His good qualities, however, far outbalanced any shortcoming that he may have had. He was generous to a fault, and we have yet to hear of a person whom he refused a favor if it was in his power to grant it. His neighbors speak in the highest praise of his hospitality and neighborly unselfishness.

After the close of the war, Mr. Mangan resumed his farm work and continued at it until he disposed of his property a few years ago.

His remains were brought to this city on Wednesday evening and taken to the home of his widow, on School Street. Thursday morning, the funeral took place from St. Augustine's Catholic Church, and he was laid at rest in the family lot in the cemetery west of the city. A widow, two sons, three daughters, a brother and a sister mourn his death.
