His parents were immigrants from Germany. They had first settled in Rock County, Wisconsin, where Ernest was born. They moved to Rolling, Langlade, County where they started a homestead in 1879, when Ernest was 5 years old.
Ernest married Fredericka Anna Conkite in 1908. The couple lived in Rolling and had one child George Frederick 1909. Fredricka died in 1909.
Ernest married second Nellie Tipler in Antigo in 1920. The couple lived in Price, Langlade County. They had one child Willis 1921.

E. G. Schroeder, Town of Rolling, Died Yesterday
E. G. Schroeder, 72, town of Rolling, farmer and chairman of the town board for 12 years, died at 4:15 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at his home. He had been in failing health for several years.
He was born Feb. 23, 1874, in Rock county and came to the town of Rollling as a child when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schroeder, homesteaded there in 1879. Following the death of his first wife, Freda Crankhit, of Hortonville, 37 years ago, he maried Nellie Tipler, who died in Novermber, 1943.
He is survived by two sons, George F., town of Rolling, and Willis, Antigo; a step son, Ray Babcock, town of Rolling; four grandchildren; three brothers, Frank and Rob, town of Rolling, and Herman, Antigo; and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Johnson and Mrs. Irene Seiber both of Sheboygan Falls, and Mrs. Marie Maxwell, Milwaukee.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the McCandless & Zobel funeral home, the Rev. E. A. Mayer, pastor of the Unity church officiating. Burial will be in the Antigo cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from Thursday afternoon on.
