Carl Friedrich Schroeder was born in Wartin, Pommern, Germany, which is northeast of Berlin. His mother's name was Wallin or Wollin. Carl used the name "Charles".

He immigrated to the United States between 1866-1868. He first settled around Milton Junction, Rock County, Wisconsin. He married Dorothea E Zimmerman, who immigrated from Germany about the same time (they knew each other in Germany). (Ronald Sieber, his son in law, said they immigrated from Germany in the fall of 1868, and Dorothea was pregnant with Frank at the time.)

Carl had the following siblings that also immigrated to the United States: August Schroeder, and Wilhemina Schroeder Hochgraber

The couples first child, William Carl Franz was born while they were living near Milton Junction. Their next three children were born in the Janesville area.
