Kathryn Blum

Kathryn Blum, 95, of Remsen, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen following a lengthy illness.

Kathryn Blum was born Nov. 6, 1910, at rural Remsen, the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Weiler) Thill. She was raised in the Remsen area and received her education in both the rural school system and St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. On Oct. 11, 1932, she married Gilbert Blum at Remsen, where they made their home. She did seamstress work in her home for many years. Gilbert died Dec. 27, 1993. Kathryn had been a resident of Happy Siesta since Sept. 24, 1999.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen and the church Guild.

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn and her husband, Gene Hewitt, two grandsons, Rod and his wife, Kim Hewitt and Dereck Hewitt and his special friend Trish, and two great-grandsons, Ryan and Tyler Hewitt, all of Sioux City; one sister, Mrs. Norbert (Eva) Budden of Granville; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Edmund (Bertha) Thill of Remsen.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, John and his wife, Blanch, Dominic and his wife Sylvia, Al and his wife, Agnes, Vernon and his wife, Grace "Pet" and Edmund; two sisters, Mary and her husband, Felix Kunkel, and Josephine Thill; and one brother-in-law, Norbert Budden.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. Friday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Guild and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be Jerome Blum Keith Arens, Mark Harnack, Tom Kockler, Dale Loutsch and Darin Wilson.
