Vernon Thill

Vernon Thill, 88, of Remsen, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Careage Hills in Cherokee.

Vernon Thill was born Dec. 22, 1916, at rural Remsen, the son of Peter and Catherine (Weiler) Thill. Vernon was raised and educated in the Remsen area and then was engaged in farming with his father. He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 21, 1942 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II, being honorably discharged Oct. 20, 1945. He then returned to farming with his father.

On Nov. 30, 1946, he married Grace "Pet" Oberman at Granville. They farmed near Remsen, retiring on the farm in 1980. Pet died July 24, 1982. Vernon moved into Remsen in 1984. On July 7, 1999 he entered Careage Hills due to multiple health problems and Alzheimers disease.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen and Post 3328 V.F.W. of Remsen.

Survivors include three daughters, Romalee and her husband, Myron Nelson of Sloan, Dana Slack and Bill Pipkin both of Omaha, Neb., and Nina Bedel of Omaha, Neb.; two sons and their wives, Peter and Sue of Sioux City, Steve and Gail of Cherokee; 12 grandchildren, Jodie (Nelson) and her husband, Kirk Reynolds of Smithland, Jennifer (Nelson) and her husband, Alan Brewer of Sloan, Lisa (Slack) and her husband, Kevin Alff of Council Bluffs, Laura Slack and her fiance Dan Wolfe, Katie Slack, Maryann Slack, Brett Bedel and Gregory Bedel, all of Omaha, Neb., Marisa (Thill) and her husband, Walter Mead of Sioux City, Jessi Thill of Westminster, Colo., Dustin Thill and Seth Thill, both of Cherokee; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan Brewer, Kallie, Karissa and Kyler Reynolds, Dylan, Delayne and Lathan Wolfe, Josiah Meads; one brother, Ed and his wife, Bertha Thill of Remsen; two sisters, Kathryn Blum of Remsen and Eva Budden of Granville.

He was preceded in death by one son, David; one son-in-law, Randy Slack; one great-grandson, Chance Wolfe at birth; three brothers and their wives, John and Blanch, Dominic Sylvia, Al and Agnes; two sisters, Mary and her husband Felix Kunkel and Josephine Thill; and two brothers-in-law, Gilbert Blum and Norbert Budden.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen, with graveside military services conducted by Post 3328 V.F.W. and Post 220 American Legion. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be Seth and Dustin Thill, Floyd, John, Todd and Jamie Fiedler.
