Gilbert T. Blum

REMSEN, Iowa -- Gilbert T. Blum, 85, of Remsen died Monday, Dec. 27, 1993, at his home after a brief illness.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. John J. McGuirk officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Blum was born Dec. 25, 1908, in rural Akron, the son of Bernard J. and Agnes (Mc Ginnis) Blum. He was raised and educated in the Akron area. He moved to Remsen area in 1928, where he was employed as a farm laborer. On Oct. 11, 1932, he married Kathryn Thill in Remsen. The couple made their home in Remsen where he operated the Texaco tank wagon for several years prior to entering the Army March 31, 1944. He was discharged April 6, 1946. He then worked for Stellingworf's Auto Salvage, Schaaf's Hardware, Bellmyer's Garage, and was a custodian for 18 years with the Remsen Public School System, retiring in 1974.

Mr. Blum was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Marilyn and her husband, Gene Hewitt of Sioux City; two grandsons, Rod and Derek Hewitt, both of Sioux City; two great-grandsons, Ryan and Tyler Hewitt, both of Sioux City; and three brothers, Edmund of Akron, Basil of Bronson and Bernell of Watsonville, Calif.

He was preceded in death by a brother, F.R. Blum; and a sister, Mrs. Rene (Bernice) LaCroix.
