Nettie Moore Rankin King Monell was my g-grandmother. She was born 20 August 1881 in Tennessee, the 7th of 12 children, to William Milton Rankin (1842-1897) and Mary Jane Moore (1846-1914).

Nettie married my g-grandfather, Thomas Edward King, in 1898 in Marion County, Tennessee and had 6 children (see 1910 census) -- but we only know of 4, and only 3 survived:
1) William Emmett King (1900-1953);
2) Baby girl King (who died when born: 1902)
3) Ernest Edward King (my grandfather)1903-1956; and
4) John Elbert King (1905-1963).
My g-grandfather, Ed King, died in a mine explosion in 1914 in Mulga Alabama, leaving Nettie a widow at the age of 33 with 3 sons.

Nettie married again 12 years later in 1926 at the age of 45 to Arvid Charles Monell (1877-1949), a widower (and a Yankee). Nettie had cared for his wife during her illness and the family story is that Mr. Monell's wife, Bertha (Bailey) Monell told Nettie that she should marry her husband after she died - that he was a good man.
My mother was very fond of her grandmother, and my mother and her brother called her "Mother Monell".

She is dearly missed.
