Thomas Edward "Ed" King, my g-grandfather, the youngest of 7 children born to John E. King and Nancy Jane Mitchell (Layne) in September, 1878, in Petros, Morgan County, Tennessee.
In 1898 he married Nettie Moore Rankin (1881-1954), my g-grandmother and had four children:
1) William Emmett King (1900-1953);
2) Baby girl King (1902-1902)
3) Ernest Edward King (1903-1956) (my grandfather); and
4) John Elbert King (1905-1963).
Ed King was killed in a mine explosion at the age of 36 in Mulga, Jefferson County, Tennessee on October 5, 1914. He was a coal miner--as was his father--by profession, and it is presumed that he moved his family to Mulga, Alabama due to the violence that had erupted between the Union and the non-Union coal miners in Tennessee. The only picture I have of my g-grandfather is when he was being carried out on a stretcher from the mines, which appeared in the Birmingham, Alabama newspaper.
