Frank J. Weiss, 72, 941 Campbell Ave., died suddenly at 11:10 p.m. Monday in Fort Hamilton Hospital, where he had been a patient since Feb. 23. He had been in failing health for the last year. He was born in Hamilton on Aug. 29, 1894, the son of Adam and Elizabeth Weiss, and was educated in the St. Peter's School and was a lifelong resident of this community. Mr. Weiss was a veteran of World War I, serving with the 330th infantry in France for 10 months. He entered the army on Jan. 28, 1918, and was honorably discharged on July 9, 1919. He married Hilda Kramer on Jan. 21, 1920, and the devoted couple enjoyed more than 46 years of marriage. Mr. Weiss loved outdoor life and nature, spending many happy hours on fishing trips with his wife, relatives and friends. He also had hobbies of flowers and vegetable gardens. As a young man, Mr. Weiss was employed at Black-Clawson Company, but in 1929 he established his own business as a carpenter-contractor and remained in this business for 37 years. A skilled carpenter and a generous man, Mr. Weiss donated many hours of service to his church, The Sisters of the Poor, local parochial schools, Hamilton Recovery Inc., and the sick and aged. He was active in civic, educational and religious organizations, being a trustee of The Holy Name Society, St. Stephen Church. Mr. Weiss was also a member of The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Guild, a charter member of Veterans of World War I, a lifelong member of The Tabernacle Society of Notre Dame, a member of Catholic Order of Foresters, and an associate board member of Hamilton Recovery Inc. Mr. Weiss leaves his wife, a brother, Edward Weiss; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Burkart and Mrs. Emma Hogan, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Weiss, and a sister, Louise Blount. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Cahill and Sons Funeral Home, 229 Dayton St. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Wednesday. Veterans of World War I will hold services in the funeral home at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, followed by Holy Name Society services at 7:30 o'clock.
