Born Dec. 7, 1936, in Turbett Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Homer S. and Mary Jane (Sheaffer) Rice.
His wife, Lillian Jean (Comerford) Rice, whom he married July 3, 1962, survives. Also surviving are: two daughters and two sons, Lillian Leach and Sherry Ann Rice, both of RR3, Port Royal, Homer S. Rice Jr., Thompsontown, and Mitchell S. Rice Sr., McAlisterville; two sisters, Mrs. Herb (Dot) Beasom, RR3, Port Royal, and Mrs. Sam (Mary Jane) Varner, McAlisterville; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Curtis Rice, on July 10, 1989, two sisters, Jennie Haas and Margaret Welshonse, a brother, Harold Rice, and an infant brother, James Rice.
He was a peacetime veteran having served in the U.S. Army.
He was a truck driver and a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of the Tuscarora Church of the Brethren.
His funeral service was held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Charles Sheaffer and the Rev. Charles Eldredge officiating. Interment was in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends called Monday 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
