Mrs. J. G. Powell, 82, of Traer, wife of the former Tama county supervisor, and a life long resident of the Traer community, died in Schoitz hospital in Waterloo last Friday morning, where she had been a patient since May 15. Mrs. Powell, who had been in failing health several months, suffered a severe stroke about a month ago. She was cared for at home until the stroke was followed by a heart attack about 2 weeks ago. Her daughter, Mrs. L . A. (Gladys) Allison, of Sacramento, California, has been here assisting in her care during the last month. The Erickson Funeral Home was comfortably filled for the services held Monday afternoon conducted by the Rev. C. Howell Bischoff, Congregational pastor. All of the Tama county court house officers and many of the other court officers and employees attended, including workers on county roads.
Relatives who came from a distance included Mr. and Mrs. Logan Campbell of El Paso, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Buskirk of Ottesen, Iowa; and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Oldfield of Ottumwa. Ruth Thomas furnished organ music. Six nephews, Mrs. Powell served as casket bearers Robert, Kenneth and Donald Powell, Robert Logan, Paul Stoakes and Leiland Hulme. In charge of the flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Finks, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Drinovsky and Mrs. Julia Danker. Interment was in the Powell lot in West Union cemetery, east of Traer.
Mrs. Powell was born Sara Logan in Perry township, April, 1879, the youngest child of James and Janet Logan, early settlers of this community. She attended Traer High School graduating with the class of 1897, then attended Western College at Toledo, taking a teacher training course. She was a rural school teacher in Howard township and in north Tama county several years before her marriage, August 23, 1904. The couple began farming the Robert Powell homestead in Clark township in association with Mr. Powell's late brother Fred. The Garfield Powells were farmers southeast of Traer until 20 years ago when they became residents of Traer, the son Lynn taking over the home farm. Mr. Powell concluded 12 years of service on the Tama county board of supervisors last December, representing the First district.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her husband and three children the son, Lynn; a son Corliss, of Reno, Nevada who came for the services; and the daughter, Gladys Allison and her daughter, Jane, both here from California for the services. Mrs. Powell also leaves two other grandchildren, Jim and Barbara Powell of Traer and a brother Frank Logan of Estherville, Iowa. Mrs. Powell's only living sister, Mrs. John (Jane) Everts of Warrensburg, Missouri.
