Mrs. H. A. Hartshorn, whose hopeless illness was mentioned last week, passed away on Friday. There seemed little ground for hope from the first of her severe sickness a week before. Naturally strong and healthy as she was, disease soon conquered. The maiden name of the deceased was Agnes McDowall. She was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, July 12. 1812. In 1850 she came to America with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert McDowall Sr., who were among our earliest settlers and who gave to this county a rich heritage in the way of a large family of excellent citizens. March 17, 1863 the deceased married Horace A Hartshorn and has since lived in the home in which she died. They were parents of nine children, two of whom preceded her. Mrs. Hartshorn was in every way a most worthy lady. She was devoted, generous, able, one of north Tama's best wives, mothers, and neighbors. The unwelcome call that took her from the home where she was so useful, be much appreciated, happy, is indeed lamentable and only the eye of faith can see why it Is as it is. Her Christian life was as perfect as was her home life. She has been a member of the U. P. church many years, and was always calm and strong in Christian faith, Such mothers are of inestimable value to the community. Their demise is always a public loss. The funeral services were conducted at the residence on Saturday. There was an immense attendance, the procession reaching almost from the home to Buckingham cemetery.
