Margaret was born on Glessal farm. She married Gilbert McDowall in Scotland in 1831. Margaret and Gilbert lived on and operated the Dangart Farm, part of the estate of Lord Ortney, near Poundland and Colmonell, Ayrshire, Scotland where all of their eleven children were born – seven sons and four daughters. Seeing little opportunity for their large family in Scotland, they came to Tama County in July 1856 with the John Galt family and settled on a farm across the road from West (Squire) Wilson, her brother. These are the names of their children; Andrew, James, Margaret Kerr, Minnie, Gilbert, John, Jean, William, Jane and Agnes (twins), David, West and Mary.
