James McDowell was the son of Gilbert McDowall and Margaret Kerr Wilson; he was born, c. 1834 in Colmonell, Ayrshire Scotland, in the Civil Parish of, Colmonell, County Ayrshire; he arrived in America on the 5th day of July 1856, from Glasgow, Scotland, he arrived in the port of New York, New York on the Ship, Edinburgh; he came with his parents and siblings. He married Sarah Hitchner the 14th day of September 1860 in Tama County, Iowa. She was the daughter of William Hitchner and his 1str Mary (unknown?) for certain, for I have found to marriage for Mary Mead, and he married 2nd Mary Wood so I will leave it as unknown, except to has again she was from his 1st marriage. The census of Buckingham, Tama County, Iowa says Sarah Hitchner was born in Ohio. The 1860 census shows James McDowell and wife Sarah F. McDowell, with children William W. Gilbert H. David D. and Mary M.
