Mrs. Sue Norton, 71, lifelong resident of the Traer community, died in the Henkle Convalescent home about 4:30 Sunday afternoon. She had been in impaired health several years and had been bedfast since May in the convalescent home, a victim of cancer.
Mrs. Norton was born Sue Hartshorn, daughter of H. A. and Agnes McDowall Hartshorn, on the Hartshorn homestead, a mile west of Traer. Her birthplace was on the farm owned in later years by Peter McEwen and purchased several years ago by R. P. Young Sr. She attended school in Traer, graduating from high school in 1898. Then she was a teacher for a few years until her marriage to A. J. (Jack) Norton April 16, 1902. All of their married life was spent in Traer. They had no children. Mr. Norton died here in 1943. Mr. Norton had been Traer's business assessor for 40 years or more and had been engaged in a general insurance business. After his death, Susan took over his business for a year or two until her health failed. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church and the Traer Eastern Star. Mrs. Horton leaves two brothers – J. H. (Harper) Hartshorn of Traer and Horace, of Portland, Oregon. The latter was unable to come for her funeral. A brother, Wilson Hartshorn and three sisters, Mrs. Frank Morison, Mrs. Henry Gardner and Mrs. John Keith, preceded her in death.
Services were held Wednesday afternoon in the United Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. Wesley Jones, pastor. A quartet composed of Don Sears, Duane States, Franklin Earley and Harris Henry, sang hymns, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. W. G. McCornack. Lois Henderson and Mrs. Dave Wilson, Mrs. Harold Young and Hazel Morrow were in charge of flowers. Pallbearers were Earl Robb, R. P. Young Sr., Clifford Allen, William Neidick Jr., Robert Stuart and C. E. Naylor. Burial was in Buckingham cemetery
