B. H. Downing served with the 49th Pennsylvania Volunteers during the entire Civil War. He and his unit were involved in the battles of Gettysburg and The Wilderness, among others. He was wounded at Spottsylvania, in the battle of The Wilderness, but returned to his unit after six weeks. He mustered out as First Lieutenant. After the war he was a home builder, and built the Victorian homes at Byers Station Historical District in Pennsylvania. In 1877 he removed to Kansas, where he served on the Wichita City Council, was Sedgwick county Undersheriff, and Election Commission Commissioner at the time of his death. He was an active member of the Garfield Post #25, Grand Army of the Republic, serving as Inspector General for the Department of Kansas. Died of congestive heart failure.
