Joseph was a builder of homes in Wichita in conjunction with his brother, Benjamin H. Downing. He married Emily Butler in 1882, but she died in childbirth in 1883. Joseph them married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Packard in 1885, but they were without issue. Lizzie died in 1951 in Kansas City.
