John married his first cousin, Mary C. Downing, on September 2, 1841. They had twelve children, all attaining adulthood. A schoolteacher and merchant, John moved with most of his family to Kansas in 1877. He died two years later. Although he was first buried in the Clearwater cemetery, he was re-interred in 1906 to Freeport to rest next to his wife, Mary, who died the year before. The original charcoal sketch of him (at right) is in the possession of Marilyn Grissom, a cousin.

Gravesite Details

The family "Downing" marker and individual markers with first names were given by Carrie Downing (q.v.) in accordance with her will.
