Daughter of Benjamin H. Downing and Kate Dowell Downing, Sallie came to Kansas with her parents in 1877, living first in Great Bend, and then to Wichita in 1883 where she spent the rest of her life. She was first a dance instructor, an Elections Commission deputy director, and later, a Police Matron for the Wichita Police Department. Sallie did not marry. Her death was from complications from a fractured femur, caused by a slip and fall on ice.
