Erastus was born in Raccoon Twp., Marion County IL. His parents were James Dornton Telford and Sarah Ann Wyatt Telford. He attended McKendree College in Lebanon IL. He married Coral B. Wright in 1900 in Litchfield IL. They raised three children in Salem IL, where he was an attorney, after serving in the Treasury Department in Washington DC under President Theodore Roosevelt. He also served in the state Senate of Illinois. He died after an automobile accident, which resulted in a broken leg, then contracted a fatal infection while in the hospital.
