James Dornton Telford was my great grandfather. He was a sheriff of Marion County IL and an owner of orchards, producing apples and peaches. He married Sarah Ann Wyatt in 1872. In the 1920s, after his wife had died, he took the train to Chester Co. South Carolina to visit with distant cousins, whose ancestors had remained in SC and not immigrated to "the North", as James' grandparents had. These cousins had fought on the Confederate side in the Civil War. By the 1920s all considered themselves part of the same family again.
