Evelyn was the third child of Erastus and Coral Telford of Salem IL. She graduated from Salem High School and attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She belonged to the Tri Delt sorority. While in school she met Dean Johnson, from California. They were married in 1930 at her home in Salem IL. Dean had played on the football teams of coach Bob Zupke while he was in college. He coached high school football at LaSalle-Peru and Freeport IL. Then the family moved to Taft California, where Dean was the head football coach for 30 years, with time spent in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War.
Evelyn married Clarence Williams, former mayor of Taft CA, in 1958.
