William Johns Succumbs to Heart Ailment
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec 16 at 12 noon in the Afton Second-Third Ward Chapel, with Counselor Boyd A. Parker of the Second Ward conducting, for William Johns, 68, longtime Star Valley farm-rancher, of Afton, who died of a heart ailment Friday, Dec. 13 at the Star Valley LDS Hospital. Interment was in the Afton City Cemetery.
William Johns was born Feb 27, 1900, at Ereka, Juab County, Utah to Richard and Mary Ellen Staten Johns. In 1901 family moved to Star Valley, where his father became a rancher-farmer in Fairview. William grew up in Fairview and Smoot, attending school in both towns.
When he was 18 years old, he went to work for Bp. Charles H. Peterson at Smoot, and while living with the Peterson's, he was converted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and on Nov. 28, 1918 he was baptized a member of the LDS Church in Cottonwood Creek by Bishop Peterson.
On April 19, 1919 he married Vivian Alberta Staley, daughter of Emma Jane Mallory and Chester Stephen Staley, at her home in Smoot, Wyo. On Sept. 16, 1919, they were sealed to each other and had their marriage solemnized in the Logan Temple.
Six sons (five of whom are still living) and four daughters, all living, were born to this union.
For several years after their marriage, Bill worked as a freighter, making trips between Star Valley and Montpelier, Idaho. Later he was ranch foreman for John H. Stoner in Cokeville, before they returned to Smoot, where he established himself as a sheep rancher and farmer and they raised their family.
He was known to his family and friends as an honest man with the unique ability and sense of humor to make other people's burdens lighter. He believed in hard work, that anything worth having is worth working and that an honest day's work should be rewarded with an honest day's pay.
He is survived by his widow, and the following sons and daughters: Roland, Cokeville, Wyo.; Dale Richard, Layton, Utah; Ivan S., Smoot; Jack Dennis, Mantica, Calif.; Earl Cordell, Clearfield, Utah; Mrs Edward (Beulah) Croft, Freedom, Wyo.; Mrs John (Thea) DeGroot, Roy, Utah; Mrs William (Gale) Collier, Shelly, Idaho; and Mrs Val W. (Genevieve) Allred, New Carrollton, Md. Other survivors are a brother, Charles Johns, Afton; a sister, Mrs Mary Millward, Salt Lake City; 43 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren. A son, U'Dell, preceded him in death.
