Roland Johns was born Aug. 21, 1926, to William and Vivian Staley Johns in Smoot, Wyo. He was the third of 10 children raised on the family ranch in Smoot. He attended grade school in Smoot. Before he could go to school, he could hook the little white mares up to the school wagon, and he and his mother drove the wagon all winter. He graduated from Star Valley High School and then joined the army where he served in Japan during World War II.
When he came home, the young girl who lived down the lane had turned into a beauty and she won his heart. Roland married Marilyn Lancaster on Jan. 10, 1948, in Ogden, Utah. That marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. To this union was born eight children: seven daughters and one son.
Roland rented different ranches in Star Valley and also worked for the ASCS office. He also worked on the Palisade Dam, oil rigs and construction in Star Valley. He always owned his own ranch while working other jobs in order to support his big family.
In 1963, Roland and Marilyn moved their family to Cokeville where they bought a bigger ranch. Roland loved this ranch and continued to operate it until he passed away.
Roland was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many positions. He also served his communities on many different boards.
To greet him on the other side are his parents and brothers, Odell, Jack, Ivan and Earl, sisters, Buelah and Gayle and one grandson,
Troy Williams.
His loving devoted wife, Marilyn, survives him. He is also survived by Elayne Finlinson (Kitt), Ellen Williams (Tim), Janet Dayton (Todd), Rowleen Keetch (Lynn), Lila Rigby (Keith), Donna Peart (Dan), Alan Johns (Barbara) and Gwen Toomer (Don), 33 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, D R Johns, and sisters, Jennie Allred and Thea Clark.
His life ended on Feb. 5, 2011, with his family surrounding him.
His funeral will be held Feb. 9 in Cokeville.
Internment will be in the Afton Cemetery.
