Ivan Staley Johns was born September 8, 1933, in Afton to William and Vivian Johns. Ivan was welcomed into this world by six older brothers and sisters; Beulah, Thea, Roland, Dale, Gayle and Genevieve. He had another older brother, Udell that died at an early age, prior to Ivan's birth. Ivan also had two younger brothers, Jack and Earl.
Ivan spent his growing up years in Smoot. he attended schools in Smoot and Afton. After graduating from Star Valley High School in 1951, he joined the military in 1954 and served for two years in Japan. After his military service, Ivan attended Utah State University studying accounting.
Two years later Ivan's mother and father were involved in a serious automobile accident and thus ended Ivan's college career. He returned home to help with the family ranch in Smoot, where he has stayed the remainder of his life. Ivan also worked at the Afton Standard station for three years and the local sawmill for 17 years. His true passion was the family ranch and his herd of sheep.
Ivan married Jean Rainey from Freedom, on July 12, 1958. shortly, after they were married Jean was visiting with Ivan about plans of celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Ivan told Jean then, they would never do that. When Jean ask why he said, "I won't be around to do that." sure enough, a man true to his words, Ivan left us just three months before their Golden anniversary.
One year after their marriage, Ivan and Jean welcomed their first son, Micheal Ivan to their home. Mike was a wonderful son and his life ended short at the age of 28. Ivan was very saddened by the loss of Mike and it was said that Ivan was never the same Ivan Johns after he lost Mike. In 1960, came his daughter, Lori. Then another year later in 1961, three kids in three years, came his son Kelly. Two more children completed the family with Bill in 1965 and Tina in 1975.
Ivan loved his beautiful wife, children and grandchildren. They brought him much joy. He worked hard with his wife and children on the family ranch. Each year the family would look forward to their annual Lagoon trip when the hay was put up.
Ivan loved holding the little grandchildren on his lap or placing them on the kitchen tabletop and playing with them. He loved little babies. Ivan never missed the opportunity to tease the children or adults. Ivan showed his affection for others by teasing them or saying just the right words to get them stirred up. Anyone who knew Ivan well was teased with affection or possibly6 to tears at some point.
Ivan was hardworking, thoughtful, strong, honest and caring. These characteristics where demonstrated through his life in how he dealt with others. Ivan always had time to listen and sometimes you wouldn't know what he thought, but he was wise. His daughter Lori said, "When faced with a tough decision, she would think of her dad and what he would do." He was straightforward and used common sense. His son Kelly will remember the times spent with his father in the mountains getting the sheep. Bill often turned to his dad for advice on how to fix equipment or the best way to get the job done. Tina loved her dad and remembers the endless teasing and affection they shared.
Two weeks ago prior to Ivan's death the immediate family was gathered together to enjoy a Sunday dinner together. He fought a valiant fight to the end and made sure mom knew how to take care of things before he left us.
Mike's son Colt shared these words in regards to his grandfather Johns. "To my grandpa who taught me so much, showed me the ropes and answered many questions. You will always be in my thought and dreams. I love you, your grandson, Colt.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Jean; his children, Lori (James) Magee; Kelly Johns; Bill Johns; and Tina (Klaus) Halterman; six siblings; 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
