Charles Johns, 85, of Afton died Oct 10, 1978 at his home in Afton of causes incident to age. Funeral services were held Oct 13 at 1 p.m. at the Afton LDS Second-Third Ward Chapel with Bp. Larry Call conducting. Interment was in the Smoot Cemetery.
He was born Feb 3, 1893 in Eureka, Utah to Richard and Mary Ellen Staten Johns their first son and second child.
At the age of seven his family moved to Star Valley and settled south of Fairview and later on the Salt River north of Smoot. He grew to maturity working on his father's farm.
In June of 1911 he married Laura Tressie Crook in Pa, Idaho and the couple later had five children.
On June 27, 1920 a fire at their home in Tygee, Idaho destroyed their home and caused the death of his wife. The family moved in with his parents on the Salt River.
He was remarried to Ber Rebecca Kennington Sept 16, 1925 and moved to Afton. They were married over 53 years and had three children. He also raised his wife's two daughters from a previous marriage.
Occupations during his life included working for farmers and ranchers, driving a school wagon in 1932 and a school bus in his later years until retirement, driving truck for Continental Oil Company for a number of years, hauling coal for the Afton creamery, road maintenance for the Wyoming State Highway Department and hauling coal and commodities for the school district.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a member of the seventies quorum and a home teacher.
He is survived by nine and daughters, one daughter Mrs Ona (Ruth) Leavitt was killed two and one half months ago while driving to Star Valley.
surviving children include Stanford, Leonard and Mrs Blanche Dode, all of Salt Lake City; Mrs Ted (Helen) Carlson, Hesperia, Calif.; Gene, Anaheim Calif; and Lavere Albert, Mrs Royal (Charlene) Jensen and Mrs Melvin (Wilda) Olsen all of Afton.
