James W. Burton served in the Civil War with the Confederate 35th Arkansas Infantry. His death in 1868 from an unknown illness, occurred after the War, while he was working in the Arkansas River bottoms in southeast Arkansas. His younger brother, Allen Franklin Burton, was sent there with a wagon to bring his body home.
