Son of Williams T. Burton and Mary Franklin Burton

William Wesley "Will" Burton served in the Civil War with the Confederate Army Company A, 11th Arkansas Infantry. He was captured at Island No. 10 (Mississippi River) was taken as a POW to Camp Douglas, Illinois; hospitalized a couple of times while a POW; and later exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi on September 4, 1862. His brother Miles F. Burton was with him and also exchanged at Vicksburg. He and Miles then joined the 11th and 17th Arkansas Consolidated Infantry and ended up captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana. His final service was after Port Hudson when he joined Company A, of Poe's Battalion of Arkansas Cavalry. William returned home safely after the War.

He was married three times. First to Sarah Clark, then to Sis Lokey and finally to Nancy McCright. He is the ancestor of most of the Burtons who live in Benton, Arkansas. Families in this line are Mayfield, Booth, Rucker, Young, Steele, McCool and Roberts.

William died on June 16, 1908.
