Kirwin Kansan--June 20, 1917--Kirwin, Kansas
John B. Gaines, son of Aaron and Leanor Gaines, was born in Champaigne County, Ohio, December 25, 1858; departed from life on the morning of June 12, 1917, at his late home 9 miles southwest of Kirwin, Kansas, aged 58 years, 5 months and 17 days.

He was married to Miss Etta Enyart January 11, 1883. To this union seven children were born, five sons and two daughters all of whom with his faithful wife were present with him in the last hours.

His sickness was of short duration though his suffering was intense which he bore with patience and fortitude. After his physician had given up all hope of his recovery, on being asked by his wife if he was ready to go if Jesus called him, he gave assurance that he was. He will be sadly missed in his home and the community in which he lived for he was a good neighbor and a kind husband and father. He leaves to mourn his untimely death, an aged brother, Moses Gaines of Kirwin, a sister, Mrs. H. B. Martin of Gretna, and numerous other relatives and friends besides his wife and children; also five grandchildren. The grandchildren are Mrs. Susie Van Horn and Sylvester O. Gaines of Glade, Carl I. of Kirwin, Wesley, Alma, Thomas and Harold who are at home. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community. May God comfort them in their sorrow.
