Phillips County Review--August 11, 1960--Phillipsburg, KS
The Kirwin community was shocked to learn of the death of Tommy Gaines of Hays Friday in a car wreck west of Glade. Mr. and Mrs. Gaines lived in Kirwin before moving to Hays. The community extends sympathy to the Gaines family.

Former Kirwin Man Dies As Car Hits Pole
Thomas E. Gaines, 62, former Kirwin resident, was killed instantly with a fractured neck last Friday around 6 p.m. when the 1960 Plymouth he was driving went out of control and hit a light pole two miles west of Glade on Highway No. 9.

Gaines of 112 West Fifth, Hays, Kansas, was going toward Logan when his car apparently went out of control, and angled across to the south side of the road into the ditch. The car traveled approximately 350 feet in the ditch, and hit a light pole with the right front fender and flipped over on its top. Gaines was killed instantly with a fractured neck, and the reason for the crash is unknown according to Sheriff Jack Chance.

When the car hit the light pole, two power lines were knocked down causing a grass fire burning 3 or 4 acres which local farmers put out. The lines being down caused Speed and Logan to be without power for about 2.5 hours, and apparently caused a freak fire on the Mrs. Bert Kinter place.

Gaines is survived by his wife, Esther of Hays; one son, Ernest, serving in the Navy; and one sister, Mrs. Alma Gibson of Phillipsburg. Funeral services were held in the Miles Chapel Tuesday morning with the Rev. Lewis Patterson officiating. Burial was in the Kirwin Cemetery.
