Obituary--Sarah Elizabeth Gaines was born October 30, 1852, in Champaign County, Ohio, and was married to John Baxter Cales at Maneir, Taswell County, Illinois, on December 1, 1870, and died at her home in Kirwin, Kansas, August 26, 1903, of paralysis of the heart. She leaves a husband, four daughters, a sister and three brothers to mourn her death. The children are Mesdames Lydia Workman, Nellie Bennett, Lina Hays and Delia Olds, and Messrs Clarence and Lester Cales. The family have lived in this neighborhood for a long time and have the sympathy of all their friends. The funeral was conducted from the home this morning by Rev. J. E. Kirkpatrick. Interment was made in the Kirwin Cemetery.

In Augusta County, Virginia, John Baxter Cales was born on November 8, 1842. His parents were James and Sarah Buchanan Cales. His nickman was "Bac".

John married Sarah Elizabeth Gaines on December 1, 1869, or 1870, in Tazewell County, Illinois. Sarah was born October 30, 1852, in Champaign County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Aaron and Leaner Gaines. Sarah died on August 26, 1903, in Kirwin, Kansas, and is buried in the Kirwin Cemetery.

John Cales died on January 28, 1930, in Larned, Kansas, and is buried in the Kirwin Cemetery.

John Cales, his wife, Sarah, and family came to Phillips County, Kansas, in 1879. They arrived by wagon train from Illinois. His father, Sarah's mother, and some brothers and sisters were also members of the train.

The family first settled 1/2 mile northwest of Agra, Kansas, where they lived for one year. Then they moved 2.5 miles north of Gretna, Kansas, where they stayed for 15 years. After that, they lived for several years in Gretna. Some time later they moved to the Kirwin area.

Six children were born to John and Sarah Cales.

Leaner was the first born. She married Grant Hayes and died in Colorado.

James Leslie was born in 1873 in Tazewell County, Illinois. He married Jesse Crawford and died in 1947 in Phillips County.

Clarence Ellsworth was born in 1875 in Tazewell County, Illinois. On April 20, 1899, he married Ida Bell Deuel. She was the daughter of George D. and Caroline M. Graham Deuel. Clarence died in 1949 in Kirwin, Kansas.

Nellie was born in 1877 in Illinois. She married Silas Bennett. Nellie died in 1953 in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Lydia was the fifth child born and married Roy Workman. She died in Yuma, Colorado.

Ardelia was the youngest child in the family. She married George Olds and died in Phillipsburg, Kansas.
