..Lydia A. Gaines was born in the state of Ohio, January 26, 1847 and passed away at her home near Gretna, December 28, 1932, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 2 days.
..When she was 15 years old, her parents moved with their family of three boys and three girls to Illinois. There she grew to womanhood and on June 11, 1863, she married Edward McDermed. To this union two daughters and three sons were born: Ardelia McDermed Loyd, Emma McDermed Lamont, John, Frank and Charles.
..Mr. McDermed passed away Sept. 15, 1876, leaving Mrs. McDermed with her family of small children. She then married Hezekiah B. Martin and to them was born one son, Moses H.
..In 1878 this family, with Mrs. Martin's brothers and sisters and their families decided to try the unclaimed West and with teams and covered wagons came to Phillips county and settled here where they experienced the joys and sorrows of a new land. In this new land, Mrs. Martin's children grew to manhood and womanhood and went out to make homes of their own.
..Death claimed her son, Moses and later Mr. Martin and still later, Mrs. Emma Lamont.
..She leaves behind to cherish her memory, Mrs. Ardelia Loyd, John of the home, Frank and Charles of Kirwin and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews and unnumbered friends.
..Her many kind and loving ways endeared her to all, but her son, John who stayed in the home all his years, will feel her passing most. Funeral services were conducted at the home Thursday afternoon by J. W. Hart, pastor of the Presbyterian church and burial was made in Fairview cemetery.
