CLYDE J. SUMMERHAYS Published Salt Lake Tribune, Saturday, Dec. 12, 1992:
Clyde Johnson Summerhays, 87, passed away peacefully at his home, after a long illness, December 9, 1992. He was born April 28, 1905 to Hilda Johnson and Joseph William Summerhays in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Sarah Vera Dixon, Oct. 4, 1931 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Clyde was known for his love for life and devotion to family and friends. He brought joy into their lives especially through music, including singing and playing the musical saw.Clyde grew up in Forest Dale, Salt Lake City and attended BYU and the University of California. At BYU he was active in student affairs and served on the Alumni Board and one year as its president.
He was a member of the LDS Church and loved serving in many positions including a mission in the Southern States, high councilor, counselor in the California Oakland Stake Presidency, Bishop of Wasatch I Ward in Salt Lake, Mission Pres. of the Ireland-Belfast Mission, and a counselor in the Temple Square Mission. He also was a veil worker in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.He was a CLU and worked for Beneficial Life Ins. Co. for many years as agent in Oakland, California; general agent in Boise, Idaho; and in Salt Lake City as Supt. of Agencies and Vice Pres. of Marketing.
He also served as president of Utah Life Managers' Association, and on the Board of the Life Insurance Agency Management Association. He was a lifetime member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers, serving as a past president; a member of Kiwanis; and a volunteer with the Mental Health Assoc.
He is survived by his wife; four children, "Sally" Sarah Anderson (Raymond G.), and Michael Dixon Summerhays (Janice Allen), of Salt Lake City; Diana Graham (Daniel W.) of Provo; and Sandra Pitcher (Frank L.), of Bremerton, Wash.; 27 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Bessie Auger of Texas. One son, Clyde Dixon Summerhays, preceded him in death. The funeral will be held at the Wasatch Ward, 1455 East Emerson Avenue (1500 So) at 12 noon, Monday, December 14. Sunday night, friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple from 6-8 p.m., or at the ward, 11-11:45 am, before the funeral.
