Thelma L. McDonald Johnson, eighth of nine children, was born to Charles and Sarah Duckworth McDonald on Aug. 14, 1925, and passed away at the Hospice Kavanaugh House in Des Moines, on July 28, 1994, at the age of 68.

Thelma attended public schools in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School in 1944. She went to Illinois for a short while to live with one of her sisters and to work. She then returned to Iowa to become a housewife and later, a mother. She worked at Watkins Toggery and at the Chariton High School cafeteria until health reasons caused her to resign in early spring of this year. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, in which she was very active.

Thelma loved music, gardening, flowers and the outdoors. She was best remembered through her kindness to others and her enthusiasm and love of life, which she put up a courageous fight for. She was a great joy to all who knew and loved her.

On Feb. 10, 1945, Thelma married Ernest "Onsky" Johnson, who preceded her in death in July of 1993. To this union were born two children, Russell and Lisa. She leaves to mourn her son Russell and wife Jeanne of Norwalk; daughter Lisa and husband Dan Kozak of Chariton; four grandchildren, Jocelyn and husband Walter Hermanson of Des Moines, Jim Johnson of Ottumwa, Ashlee and Kristopher Kozak of Chariton; one great-grandchild, Jacob Hermanson; one brother, Richard McDonald of Russell; and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Her husband, parents, two brothers and five sisters preceded her in death.

Thelma was a very devoted mother and especially devoted to her grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 1, 1994, at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul McKinley officiating. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Joe Shore, Mike Crivaro, Pat Jennings, Dr. James Egley, Wayne Fletcher and Wayne Wallace. Honorary bearers include A.V. Hass, Fred Fuller, Curt Deming, Chris Deming, Mike Fletcher, Steve McDonald, Scott McDonald, Stan McDonald, Wayne Watkins, Dave Fletcher and Scott Luehring.
