Thursday, August 4, 1983

Ethel M. Deming Pirtle, daughter of Charles and Sarah McDonald, was born July 11, 1920, at Russell, Iowa. She passed away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, July 12, 1983, at the age of 63 years and two days.

Ethel graduated from Chariton High School with the class of 1938. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Florine's Evening Circle and past member of Russell Beta Sigma Phi.

On June 13, 1940, Ethel was united in marriage to Willard Deming and to this union were born three children, Curtis Deming of Jacksonville, Fla., Chris Deming of Aspen, Colo., and Mrs. Cathy Quade of Pella.

Most of her life was spent in the Chariton area as a farm wife and Hy-Vee secretary with the exception of four years spent in Florida where she owned partnership in a Day Care Center.

On Oct. 27, 1973, Ethel was united in marriage to Raymond Pirtle at the First United Methodist Church, who survives. Also surviving are her two sons, Curtis Deming and Chris Deming, daughter Cathy Quade; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Raymond's three daughters, Mrs. Mayme Stout, Billings, Mont., Sandra Wollard, Monroe, Conn., and Mrs. Joyce Roby, Des Moines and five grandchildren.

Also surviving her are three sisters, Mildred Parsons, Opal Deming and Thelma Johnson, all of Chariton; one brother Richard McDonald of Russell, as well as a host of relatives and friends.

Ethel was preceded in death by her mother and father: a sister and brother in infancy; a sister, Iva McDonald, a brother, Howard McDonald, and husband, Willard Deming.

Ethel is best remembered through her kindness to others, and her enthusiasm and love of life which she put up such a courageous fight for. Her life was a great joy to all who knew and loved her.

Services were held at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton Saturday, July 16, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. George McMullen officiated. Interment was in the Bethel Cemetery.
