John is believed to have left his parent home in Polk County, MO after the Civil War settling in the Sutter County, California area. He married Ida Gardner. They had three children: Lillie May (1879), Charles (1884) and Jesse (1891). He and his family moved to Cloverdale, Sonoma County, California abt 1889. After the death of his wife Ida, John married Laura Eleanor (Bates)(Crigler), abt 1896. Laura had three children by a previous marriage; she and John had a son John
Orton in June 1898.
