Michael (Mikel) was born in Tennessee (probably McMinn County) in 1833, the son of Samuel Winter (Sr) and Jane (Hammill) Dixon. In 1850 he and his father were working as farm laborers on adjoining farms. After 1850 Michael may have followed or accompanied his future wife's family to Dallas County, Missouri. Michael probably married Martha A. Hale (daughter of Frederick & Sally Hale) abt 1854 in Dallas County. After the birth of their first son, John Thomas, in 1855, the families moved to Polk County, Missouri. In 1860 Michael and Frederick Hale are living on adjacent farms; Michael was renting the land which he farmed. While there they gave birth to six additional children George B., Samuel Carrick, Margaret, Elizabeth Jane, Frederick C., and William M. During the Civil War Michael supported the Confederacy where he is found on the rolls of Company G, 11th Missouri Infantry (Confederacy). His name is contained on the list of soldiers surrendered in New Orleans, LA by General E.K. Smith in 1865. This, combined with a General Order by the Missouri Militia which would have held him liable for "damages resulting from actions of lawless bands" probably gave him reason to move to Boone County in the ca 1869. While living in Perche Twp, Boone County, Missouri 3 additional children were born: Mary S., Sarah N., and Charles M.
