Bert "Bart" Baartman, 77, Pipestone, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone.

Funeral services were Friday, July 25 at First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone with Rev. Daniel Billings officiating.

Pallbearers were Darren Baartman, Brian Baartman, Troy Baartman, Toby Baartman, Brent Baartman, Bob Baartman and Shawn Baartman.

Interment was in Holland Cemetery in Holland.

Bert "Bart: Baartman was born in Pleun and Dorothy (Berkenpas) Baartman on Dec. 27, 1925 on the family farm in Sioux County, near Middleberg, Iowa where he attended school. In 1936, he moved with his parents to a farm in Lincoln County near Lake Benton. He continued attending school through eighth grade. In 1940, he again moved with his parents to a farm in Pipestone County near Ruthton.

He married Claretta Zeinstra in Holland on July 20, 1946. After they were married, they lived and farmed in Aetna Township of Pipestone County. After a farm accident in 1965, they moved to Pipestone where Bart owned and operated a shoe repair business in Pipestone for 28 years. After his retirement in 1994, he continued to live in Pipestone. He became a resident of Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone on Dec. 24, 2002.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone where he served as a church elder and on the memorial committee. He served on the Aetna Township ASC and was a board member of the rural fire department. He served on the Pipestone County Association for Retarded Children, the board for SCHWIL, a seven-county group for the handicapped and the board for the tri-state show service association. He was a past member of Noon Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife, Claretta; two sons, Bruce (Caroline), Ruthton and Curt (Deb), Ruthton; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy (Jim Cramer Blom, Esteline, SD.

He was preceded in death by his twin sons, Peter and Pleun Baartman; one brother, Marion Baartman and two sisters, Pauline Gorter and Cynthia Blom.
