Pleun David Baartman was born on February 23, 1954 to Bert and Claretta (Zeinstra) Baartman in Tyler, Minnesota. He was raised on the family farm near Ruthton, Minnesota where he attended school. In 1966, he moved with his family to Pipestone, Minnesota and graduated from Pipestone High School in 1972. He then attended Watertown Lake Area Vocational Technical School in Watertown, South Dakota where he received his training as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Upon completion of his education, he was employed at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota for a couple of years. He then worked at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.On August 18, 1973 he was united in marriage to Debra Kay Fiest in Pipestone, Minnesota. They were later divorced in June 1977. In 1980, he moved to Fresno, California and became employed at the Fresno Community Hospital. While employed there, he worked for four years as a specialist in the heart monitor department and for seven years in the kidney dialysis department. Pleun died at his home on Tuesday, January 25, 1994, surrounded by his many friends. He died at the age of 39 years, 11 months and 2 days.

Pleun enjoyed collecting antiques and refinishing antique furniture. He was known by his family and friends for his kindheartedness.

He is lovingly remembered by his parents, Bert "Bart" and Claretta Baartman of Pipestone, Minnesota; two brothers, Bruce and his wife Caroline Baartman of Ruthton, Minnesota, and Curt and his wife Deb Baartman of Cottonwood, Minnesota; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Peter Dennis Baartman who died on January 21, 1994; his paternal grandparents, Pleun and Dora Baartman; and his maternal grandparents, Peter and Winnie Zeinstra.
