RUTHTON - Services for Bruce Baartman, 69, of Ruthton, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton. Visitation is from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Ruthton. Arrangements are provided by Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone Chapel.

He died suddenly on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Tyler Healthcare Center.

Bruce Dale Baartman was born Feb. 19, 1947, to Bert and Claretta (Zeinstra) Baartman in Tyler. Bruce was baptized and made his profession of faith at the Holland Christian Reformed Church. He grew up on a farm in rural Ruthton, Minnesota. He attended and graduated from Ruthton High School in 1965. While in school, he enjoyed all sports including football, basketball, and track. Following his education, he joined the United States National Guard and was stationed in Madison, South Dakota. During that time he was also attending vocational technical training for plumbing at Jackson. Bruce was united in marriage Sept. 3, 1967, to Caroline Sether at Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton. Their union was blessed with three children and 48 years of marriage together. The couple made their home and raised their family in Ruthton. Established in 1977, Bruce was the owner and operator of Buffalo Ridge Plumbing and Heating in Ruthton. In addition to plumbing, he worked many years as a bus driver and manager for Tyler Bus Company. He was also very involved in the operations of the city of Ruthton, including six years as city maintenance man. Bruce was a hard worker and always put his very best to whatever he was involved in.

Bruce was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton. Bruce had served on the councils of church and city. He was a member of the former Ruthton Community Club. In 2006, he originated the beautification committee of Ruthton and enjoyed preparing for the various town celebrations. Bruce was an avid Twins, Vikings, Gophers, and area high school sports fan. He enjoyed westerns, old cars, and the companionship of his dogs. He valued time spent with his family and was especially proud of his nine grandchildren.

Bruce is lovingly remembered by his wife, Caroline of Ruthton; his children, Darren Baartman of Pipestone, Carrie Leddy of Pipestone, and Brian (and Jina) Baartman of Ruthton; nine grandchildren; Brayden, Cade, Darrick, Darian, Quinn, Jett, Jared, Kylea, and Laken; brother, Curt (and Deb) Baartman of Ruthton; and many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Claretta; brothers, Peter and Pleun.
