Peter Dennis Baartman was born to Bert and Claretta (Zeinstra) Baartman in Tyler, Minnesota on February 23, 1954. He was raised on the family farm near Ruthton, Minnesota where he attended school. In 1966 he moved with his family to Pipestone, Minnesota and graduated from Pipestone High School in 1971. Upon completion of his education, he was employed at Marshall Produce in Pipestone for several years. He also worked for a short time at Marigold Dairy and Erickson's Gas Station. He then become employed at Wood's Manufacturing in Luverne, Minnesota where he worked for several years. He worked for Swift's Poultry Processing Company in Marshall, Minnesota for three years. On April 22, 1977 he was united in marriage to Saralee Ranae Baker. They later divorced in February 1984. There were two children born to this union: Monica Joy and Shawn Paul. On June 30, 1985 he was united in marriage to Rhonda TenCate. They were divorced in 1987. One child was born to this union: Patty Rae. In 1991, he moved to Worthington, Minnesota where he was currently employed at Hardee's Restaurant. In July, 1993, Peter was diagnosed as having a rate form of leukemia called promyelocytic. Following treatments he went into remission until January 2, 1994 when he was admitted to Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He died there on Friday evening, January 21, 1994 at the age of 39 years, 10 months and 28 days.

He is lovingly remembered by his three children, Monica Baartman of Luverne, Minnesota, Shawn Baartman of Luverne, Minnesota, and Patty Baartman of Tyler, Minnesota; his parents, Bert "Bart" and Claretta Baartman of Pipestone, Minnesota; and is three brothers, Bruce and his wife Caroline Baartman of Ruthton, Minnesota, Curt and his wife Deb Baartman of Cottonwood, Minnesota, and his twin brother, Pleun "David" Baartman of Fresno, California. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Pleun and Dora Baartman, and his maternal grandparents, Peter and Winnie Zeinstra.
