Ignatius W. "Ig" Flax, 87, Ellis, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Hays Good Samaritan Center. He was born July 19, 1922, in Ransom to Gotfred and Catherine (Weber) Flax.

He married Martina Unrein on Jan. 7, 1947, at St. Michael Catholic Church, La Crosse. She preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 2002.

He was a farmer and stockman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Ransom VFW and Anno Sanger American Legion Post No. 209, Franklin, Neb.

Survivors include two sons, Leon Flax and wife, Maureen, Dodge City, and Leroy Flax and wife, Janice, WaKeeney; eight daughters, Martina Thomas and husband, Seth, Naponee, Neb., Shirley Peintner-Strickert and husband, Paul, Scott City, Cecelia Werth and husband, Neil, Hays, Catherine Webber and husband, Donald, Franklin, Mary Jane Knapp and Elaine Riedell, WaKeeney, Gladys Owens and husband, Pat, St. Francis, and Corona Hoch and husband, Eric, Medicine Lodge; three brothers, Lawrence Flax and wife, Betty, Dodge City, Father Myron Flax, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Leonard Flax and wife, Irene, Wright; two sisters, Helen Schuler, Ness City, and Sister Mary Ann Flax, Lexington, Neb.; 35 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; 3 stepgreat-grandchildren; 2 stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a daughter, Mildred Werth; three brothers, infant Paul, Eugene and Herman Flax; a sister, Rosie Flax; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Ellis; burial in St. Mary Cemetery with military honors by the Ellis VFW. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 8:45 a.m. to service time Monday at the church. A parish vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's School or St. Mary Catholic Church.
