They lost a son in November 1885 and second one in 1887. Its believed his nephew, Edward John Wood, joined them on trip to Carthage for he is reported residing here for fourteen months in that time period.

They resided at 309 south Orchard street when his widowed sister, Sarah Wood Boggess, her three young sons and sister arrived in Carthage September 1889 from Bristol, formerly Cherry Camp, West Virginia, formerly Virginia, to reside at 318 south Orchard street.

George was a public spirited citizen, having built many of the public school buildings, paved streets in Carthage as well as some more eloquent homes, plus the first telephone system for Carthage, later developing the Bellaire Estates subdivision and was generally, most active in all civic affairs.

He spent three years back at Wheeling, Ohio county, West Virginia area at turn of century installing telephone systems for small towns and was involved with brother "T K" (who built the Carthage Post Office in 1900) in building a portion of "Frisco" railroad system in Oklahoma and Texas. He purchased home built for G A Rose, which widow Lizzie Halzelgrave lived in then after daughter Laura's demise was bought by the Rodenberg's converted to the Linden Apartments.
