Birth: Father's 7th and 4th of five known children to his 2nd wife in Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri, two months following father's plat of what now is Park cemetery.

Elizabeth reportedly had invested most of her father's, Timothy Regan, inheritance with half-brother, S H Regan, of which much was lost before his 1914 death. Following 1907 death of husband in the Chicago area, "Lizzie" returned to live in Carthage, Missouri to raise her three sons for next fourteen or so years.

Census: 1880, age 8-months Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri with parents & four known siblings.

Census: 1900, age 20 Chicago Ward 32, Cook county, Illinois with hubby, 1st known child, husband's parents & sister, at 4709/11 Champlain avenue.

Census: 1910, age 30 Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri widowed with three sons and mother-in-law, at 1320 south Main street. (home built for G A Rose, later owned by George Brown Wood)

She served on the early board of Park Cemetery Association before it was sold in part to her son Albert.

Census: 1920, age 40 Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri with two older sons at 202 10th street. (son Alfred is listed with same address five days later in R A Jackson residence which has a different address, so the enumerator may (?) have errorred.)

Census: 1930, age 50 Chicago, Cook county, Illinois a "child nurse" in household of Gray B Tuthill, with two children, at 8901 Pleasant avenue.

Following is from: "The Ancestors of Edna Frances Cady" (1991) by Robert Cady Gates.

"William married Elizabeth Regan, daughter of Timothy and Susan G. Regan of Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri. Elizabeth Regan was called Lizzie by members of her family. After their marriage, about 1899, the couple went to live in Chicago. There, he attended the University of Chicago and graduated from medical school.

"Family members say that Lizzie paid for her husband's education with money she had inherited from her wealthy father who had died in 1897. According to family sources, Lizzie invested her money in the Regan Land Company, managed by her [half] brother Samuel, and both eventually lost most of the wealth their father had left them.

"About a year and a half after Dr. Hesselgrave began to practice medicine in Lake Villa, Lake County, Illinois, he died suddenly on 18 August 1907, at the age of 29, leaving his wife and three young children [2nd born had died]. Lizzie, did not marry again. She returned to Carthage, Missouri and lived there until at least 1924. Later, she returned to Chicago where she lived for many years. During the 1930's, she worked in Chicago for the family of Grey B. and Natlan (Gates) Tuthill, helping to educate their children. Elizabeth (Regan) Hesselgrave enjoyed music and was an accomplished pianist.

"On 21 January 1958, she died in Mishawaka, Indiana where she had moved about 1950, apparently to be near her son William Edward Hesselgrave. She was buried beside her husband and his parents at Mount Hope Cemetery in Chicago."

DEATH NOTICES

CARTHAGE, Mo., Jan 23 - Albert Hesselgrave, superintendent of Park cemetery, left today for Mishawaka, Ind. to attend the funeral of his mother, Mrs Elizabeth Regan Hesselgrave. Mrs Hesselgrave died unexpectedly Tuesday night. She was 76 years old.

Mrs Hesselgrave was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Regan of Carthage and was born here September 23, !879. She married Dr. William E Hesselgrave in Chicago February 14, 1900 (sic). Dr Hesselgrave was a practicing physician in Chicago and died in 1906 (sic).

Surviving also are two other sons, Edward Hesselgrave, Phoenix, Ariz., son W. E. Hesselgrave , South Bend, Ind., and a grandson William Hesselgrave, East Lansing, Mich.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 o'clock, Friday morning at South Bend. Burial will be in the family lot in Chicago.
