Harry L. Johnson, 83, of 717 Park St. died Thursday afternoon at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. Graveside rites were conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Burial was at the West Liberty Cemetery near Searsboro.

The son of George M. and Emma Watson Johnson, he was born Dec. 31, 1893, near Searsboro. He attended the Bunker Hill school. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War 1.

On Jan. 9, 1923, he was married to Mamie Mikles at Montezuma. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Searsboro area until the early 1950s when they moved to the Grinnell area. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Grinnell American Legion post.

Survivors include his wife, Mamie; his children, Mrs. Lester Gylena B. Pickhardt of Malcom and Delno F. Johnson of Grinnell; six grandsons; five granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Fred Johnson of Lynnville, Albert Johnson of Grinnell, and George E. Johnson of rural Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jesse Lavern "Ike" Johnson, who died in 1964; three brothers and five sisters.
