"Norman E. Nef, 84, of Burton, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Madison Memorial Hospital of heart failure.
He was born Jan. 15, 1925 in Burton, the fourth of eight children of Emil and Lenora Johnson Nef.
He attended Burton Elementary School and Madison High School, graduating in 1943. He attended Ricks College until he was called to serve in the Navy, where he served
as a radioman third class.
He married Phyllis Allgood on Jan. 4, 1946 in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in a variety of callings including bishop, high councilor and patriarch of the Ricks College 2nd Stake for 18 years.
He served on the Board of Directors at Madison Memorial Hospital, and also on the Board of Directors of Madison Co-op.
He worked for several area farmers before acquiring his own farm west of Idaho Falls. He was still actively pursuing his farming at the time of his death.
Norman had a love of flying and often would take his grandchildren for flights. He was a partner in the Rexburg Flying Service for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Burton; children David (Arlene) Nef of Idaho Falls, Brook (Deanna) Nef of Idaho Falls, Julie (Wade) Saurey of Rexburg and Lori Ann (Brad) Hill of St. Anthony; siblings Bernice Curtis of California, Relda (LeRoy) McGarry of Rexburg, Belva (Lloyd) Garner of Utah and Arnold (Leta) Nef of Utah; as well as 21 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Darrell and Weldon and his sister Dorothy.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 20, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Burton LDS 1st Ward chapel with Bishop Robert Hodgen officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home and again from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Burton Cemetery."
