Some sources give Margaret's birthdate as 1832 and some as 1834; She was born to Joshua and Ann Blackburn in Dearham, Cumberland, England. She gave birth to two sons while single, but only her youngest son went with her when she married Andrew Robson in Oct 1862.

She and Andrew had a large family so when he learned of the opportunities in America, he brought his mother, his wife, and eight of the children.

Margaret was older than Andrew, but out-lived him by fifteen years so had a chance to get to know her grandchildren and some of her great-grandchildren.
