T-Sgt. Walter Shearing was killed in action in Germany on April 17, 1945. He was born in Gainesville on March 9, 1918, the son of Zaida and the late Herbert Shearing. He entered the service in March 1942 and has been overseas since September 1944. He had recently been awarded the Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster. He is survived by his mother; a sister, Dorothy VanSlyke of Griffiths Corners; three brothers, Donald and Arthur of Gainesville, Robert of Rock Glen. A memorial service was held at Gainesville Methodist Church, a memorial plaque is in place at Maple Grove, Gainesville.
