Mrs. Sarah Jane Mee, Pioneer Of Stockade Days in City, Dies At Home; Ill for Past Two Years
Widely Known Woman Attended First Schools Established in Valley
Death yesterday claimed one of the city's best known pioneer women, Mrs. Sarah Jane Mee, widow of the late William H. Mee. Mrs. Mee, who has been ill for two years, passed away at 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning at her home, 578 Seventh street.
Her death, though rather sudden, was not unexpected, as Mrs. Mee suffered a paralytic stroke in August, 1926, from which she never fully recovered. She had been failing rapidly for the past two months.
Born in Alabama, March 3, 1855, Mrs. Mee came to San Bernardino with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. James West, when she was four years old. The city was but little more than a stockade when the family arrived here, and they were among the pioneers whose names were connected with the early history of San Bernardino.
Mrs. Mee attended the first school established in San Bernardino, known as the Warm Creek school. She went through the elementary and advanced grades. In 1870 she married William H. Mee, also a pioneer resident of the city. Mr. Mee engaged in the blacksmith trade, and for many years conducted a shop which was located on the west side of D street between Fourth and Fifth streets. The family home was directly across the street, and Mrs. Mee lived there after the death of her husband in 1911 until about a year ago, when she moved to occupy the home of her daughter, Mrs. I. H. Curtis, who died last year.
Surviving Mrs. Mee are two brothers, George West, of San Bernardino, and T. J. West, of Fresno; a sister, Mrs. C. A. More, of San Bernardino;
and three children, Miss Addie Mee, Sydney Mee of San Bernardino; J. W. Mee of San Pedro; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Mee attended the First Church of Christ, Scientist, and was a member of the San Bernardino Pioneer society.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon from the Mark B. Shaw memorial chapel. Mrs. B. W. Cruikshank, Christian Science reader, will officiate.
