Mrs. Z. T. Bell Attends Golden Wedding Event
Mrs. Z. T. Bell has returned from Fresno, where she attended the golden wedding celebration of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. West, held March 16, at their home. Mr. and Mrs. West are natives of San Bernardino and were married here 50 years ago.
Their wedding was one of the important social events of that time and took place at the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. Faburn, which stood at the corner of Third street and Mount Vernon avenue, where the Santa Fe viaduct now is. The bride, formerly was Miss Nettie Blackburn and the bridegroom was familiarly known as "Bud" West, both families being prominent in the early days of San Bernardino.
One of the features of the reception in observance of the fiftieth anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. West allowed their guests to read the treasured clipping from the old San Bernardino Times, later the Index and still later The Evening Telegram. The "social reporter" wrote an interesting account of the nuptials in the style of the day, telling of going to the wedding in "a hack," and "Miss Nettie Blackburn winning the 'Bud' of the 'West'."
The Wests have resided at Fresno about 20 years, Mr. West having been sent there as a special officer for the Santa Fe. He is now retired and is proprietor of a fine chicken ranch. Many of their friends called during the reception, decorations for which followed the golden theme. A harpist played beautiful numbers throughout the afternoon and the house was adorned with quantities of daffodils, calendulas and Lady Bankshear roses.
The refreshment table was laid with an imported hand-made cloth over gold satin and centered with a huge crystal bowl filled with golden daffodils and fern. Crystal candelabra held golden candles, which burned all afternoon.
Mrs. Bell presided at the coffee service, cakes in variety and ice cream molded as golden wedding bells being served with the beverages. Two cakes, holding 50 gold tapers, also decorated the table. Mr. and Mrs. West were assisted in receiving by Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hawley of Fresno, also well known in San Bernardino.
A number of relatives of the couple attended the reception, including Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Mee, a nephew of Mr. West, of San Pedro; Mrs. J. Sidney Mee, formerly of San Bernardino, and her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lavon Swords (Helen Mee) of Taft; Mrs. Ella MaCall of San Francisco, sister of Mrs. West; and Charles Blackburn, brother of Mrs. West, from Anderson.
